ZACHARY TAYLOR
(1784 - 1850) Twelfth President of the United States, 'Old Rough and Ready' was also a hero of the Mexican War, taking Monterrey and defeating Santa Anna. ZACHARY TAYLOR IS COMMISSIONED A COLONEL Historic content A.L.S. 'Z. Taylor Col. 159 Regt. U.S. Army', 1p. 4to., Fort Crawford Wisconsin, March 5, 1835, to Adjutant Gen. Gen Roger Jones (1789-1852). In full: 'Your communication of the 26th of Jan. last accompanied by a commission for me as a Col. Brevet in the Army of the U. States and a blank form of an oath to be sworn and subscribed to, has this moment been received the latter has been complied with and herewith enclosed.' Tears along the folds have been repaired on the verso, else fine. While a colonel, Taylor would win some of his greatest glories: in 1837, the Second Seminole War was underway and Taylor was dispatched to Florida where he built Fort Gardiner and Fort Basinger as supply depots and communication centers in support of Jesup's campaign to trap the Seminoles and their allies in order to force them to fight or surrender. He engaged in battle with the Seminoles in the Christmas Day Battle of Lake Okeechobee, which was among the largest U.S.–Indian battles of the nineteenth century; as a result, he was promoted to brigadier general.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
