AARON BURR
(1756 - 1836) Vice President under Jefferson with whom he had been tied in the Presidential election of 1800, defeated through the efforts of Alexander Hamilton who he later killed in a duel. Interesting A.L.S. "A. Burr", 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Mar. 4, 1818, to Martha Bradstreet, the granddaughter of General John Bradstreet. In part: "...The usual style is humbly sheweth - but I do not like that you should use that word...I will procure to be drawn for you a Law of four folio pages, if it be your wish - The draught enclosed has, in my opinion, words enough. With proper attention, the act may be passed through both houses in the Court of these days...". Martha Bradstreet (1780-1871) was a longtime client of Burr, whom she hired to recover her estate in Utica, N.Y. which had been confiscated by the British during the Revolution.
