Description:

A PAIR OF GEN. JOSEPH STILWELL'S STARS
A fine set of war-date relics, a pair of silver stars from the uniform of Gen. JOSEPH STILWELL (1883 - 1946) "Vinegar Joe", American Army general who commanded all American forces in the China-Burma-India theater in World War II; a brilliant tactician and combat leader. The sterling silver stars, maker marked "AMICO", remain attached to the original letter of transmittal headed: "Headquarters Army Ground Forces Office of the Commanding Forces", Washington, May 29, 1945 sent by Stilwell's aide de camp, Maj. Carl G. Arnold to John R. Kauffmann, chairman of the 7th War Loan Air Show Committee in St. Louis. Arnold states that he encloses: "...a set of General Stilwell's stars...The General is on an inspection trip at the present time...with these stars come his personal best wishes and the hope that your 7th Bond Drive will go over the top...". Letter is soiled and waterstained, the stars themselves are in excellent condition. On October 19, 1944, Stilwell was recalled from his command by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, partly as a result of controversy concerning the casualties suffered by U.S. forces in Burma and partly due to continuing difficulties with the British and Chinese commanders. Following his service in China, Stilwell took on an advisory role in the Army. His most notable recommendation was for a vast improvement of the Army's defenses against all airborne threats, including ballistic missiles.
