Description:

(A PAINTING FROM THE ARCHIVE OF MAD MAGAZINE FOUNDER WILLIAM GAINES)
(1922 - 1992) Founder of EC comic book corp., best known for their lineup of horror and science fiction titles, including Tales from the Crypt. Government crackdown forced Gaines to subscribe to the Comic Book Code of censorship in the late 1950s or risk his publications not being delivered to newsstands. Rather than compromise his company, Gaines released new titles such as MAD (later MAD Magazine) and published new works in magazine format, thus circumventing the Comic Book Code. From the estate of Bill Gaines we offer an original 30" x 72" painting executed mixed media on two separate storyboards by an unnamed artist, depicting MUHAMMAD ALI and friends sitting around a large table preparing for a holiday meal. The artwork is in the style used in MAD Magazine as if parodying a film, however, no artist's name is evident. Some of the more familiar faces surrounding Ali include: Jimmy, Amy and Rosalind Carter, Paul Newman, Lilly Tomlin, Bill Jean King, John Travolta, Howard Cosell, Ossie Davis, Frank Sinatra, and more. Signed by Ali at top for the first storyboard, adding date "Nov. 3, 1979". The verso identifies the piece in an unknown hand as being in Gaines' possession ca. 1979. Light soiling and wear at edges not affecting painting. A most unusual item worthy of further research.
