Description:

A MARBLE BUST OF NAPOLEON FROM THE WORKSHOP OF CHAUDET
An outstanding original contemporary marble bust of Napoleon Bonaparte from the workshop of Antoine Denis Chaudet (1763–1810). The white carrara bianco bust stands 50 cm. (19.7 in.) tall, 32 cm. (12.6 in.) deep and 26 cm. (10.2 in.) wide, with 'NAPOLEON', once highlighted in black, chiseled in large letters upon the front of the base. Chaudet was a French sculptor who worked in the neoclassical style. He began his artistic training as a student of Jean-Baptiste Stouf at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. In 1784 his bas-relief, 'Joseph Sold into Slavery by His Brothers', was awarded the Prix-de-Rome. In 1805, he became a member of the Institute of France. In February 1810, he took the post of Professor-Rector at the École des Beaux-Arts, replacing Louis-Jean-François Lagrenee, who had died several years before. Napoleon so loved Chadet's work, in 1812, he transported Chaudet's marble statue of him to Moscow, to install it in a prominent place there. It is currently on display at the Borodino Panorama Museum. A beautiful, realistic bust of the Emperor from the workshop of his most favored sculptor. From the personal collection of the foremost collector of Napoleonic relics in the world.
