Description:

A LOCK OF HAIR OF SEMINOLE WARRIOR OSCEOLA
A substantial lock of dark brown hair from the celebrated Seminole leader Osceola (1804-1838). In 1835, he plunged his knife into the treaty he was asked to sign that would move his people from their swamplands in the Southeast to the unoccupied territory west of the Mississippi. This action precipitated the Second Seminole War, a seven-year battle in the Florida swamps against federal troops. The hair is wrapped into a circle and accompanied by a 1843 period note of provenance from a Dr. Lewis A. Sayre, M.D. of New York: "Lock of hair taken from the head of Osceola the celebrated Indian chief. The head is now with the possessions of John Peck in St. Augustine E. Florida Feby. 1843 - this lock was cut by myself L.S.". Also accompanied by a 1932 note from the de Sherbinin Family, in part: "...This lock of hair was cut by Dr. Lewis A. Sayre and on his death passed to his son Dr. Reginald H. Sayre who died three years ago at his residence 1014 Madison Ave. New York. His sister and executrix Miss Mary Hall Sayre gave me this lock in June 1932 when she closed the house and moved to a motel. Mrs. de Sherbinin 818 Madison Ave. New York City Aug. 22, 1932". Obtained by our consignor directly from the de Sherbinin estate. Very good condition, a certain rarity.
