Description:

6TH PENN. REGIMENT FLAG RELIC
A terrific relic of the gallant 61st Pennsylvania Volunteers, a 2.5" x 2.5" navy blue cloth section with a central white star of the regiment's battle flag! The flag swatch is age toned but otherwise fine, and is handsomely mounted to ivory backing. The relic is contained within a pearl cardboard mount with a b/w print of the 61st before the Battle of Fair Oaks above and a printed description of the swatch and regimental history below. Certified letter of provenance on verso indicates that the relic was retrieved from a G.A.R. Hall in Philadelphia. The 61st Pa. Vols. fought in many of the Federal Army's major campaigns and lost hundreds of enlisted men and officers-- The 61st lost more officers in combat than any other Federal regiment. Despite the lengthy term of service in battle and losses, the 61st never lost a battle flag and was finally mustered out of service in Pittsburg after war's end in 1865. A rare and unique piece of Civil War history!
