Description:

511TH PARACHUTE INFANTRY REGIMENT SHIRT AND TUNIC
A great pair of insignia-laden items from a member of the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment, a rare paratroop regiment which dropped into and fought at Manila and took part in the Raid at Los Banos, freeing over 2,000 foreign Allied civilians from a Japanese internment camp south of Manila, with its B Company performing a parachute jump on the camp itself. The lot includes this soldier's wool Eisenhower jacket, official issue. The left sleeve bears a fine custom silver bullion 11th Airborne shoulder patch, probably theater made, with separate title patch. The right shoulder bears a finely embroidered 511th P.I.R. patch, also with a separate, title patch. The front of the jacket has two rare 'U.S. 511' collar discs on the lapels, as well as a cloth jump badge, Presidential Unit Citation ribbon, and Honorable Discharge patch. There is a moth hole at the bottom of the right lapel, covered when the jacket is normally displayed. SOLD WITH: the same soldier's wool shirt, official issue, with identical 511th P.I.R. shoulder patch and standard issue cloth 11th Air Force shoulder patches sewn thereto. Overall, both garments are in very good condition...and rare! The 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment was first activated under Colonel Orin D. 'Hard Rock' Haugen. It trained in the U.S. and the South Pacific until November 1944, when it was sent to the Philippines to join the Battle of Leyte. On 3 February 1945 the 511th on board 48 C-47 aircraft jumped on Tagaytay Ridge. During the Battle of Manila, the 511th fought through the Japanese Genko Line from 5–12 February, penetrating as far into Manila as the Dewey-Libertad area, before turning east to attack and recapture Fort William McKinley. On 23 February its 1st Battalion took part in the Raid at Los Banos. With the rest of the 11th Airborne, it also engaged Japanese forces throughout the provinces of Laguna, Batangas, and Tayabas (modern Quezon). On 23 June elements of the regiment took part in the war's final combat jump at Aparri in northern Luzon.
