Description:

372ND REGIMENT (BLACK) IDENTIFIED GARRISON CAP
Rare wool garrison cap owned by one 'L. Hersh' of the 372nd Infantry Regiment and named by him in ink twice within the cap. The left side of the cap bears a 2 1/8 in. diameter two-piece patch depicting a red hand, the emblem of the regiment. The patch was constructed using a red backing upon which is sewn a cut-out of a hand, allowing the red to show through. This ensemble, which appears to have a black wool backing, has been double-stitched in red to the cap. Sweatband is soiled, as one would expect, else very good. with no mothing. Fine condition. The 372nd Infantry Regiment was a segregated African American regiment, nominally a part of the 93rd Division, that served in World War I under French Army command. During nine days of intense fighting in October, 1918, the 372nd progressed nine kilometers through powerful German defenses, taking nearly 600 prisoners, 15 guns artillery pieces, 20 minenwerfers, and nearly 150 machine guns, securing an enormous amount of engineering material, an important supply of artillery ammunition, and brought down by fire three enemy aircraft.
