Description:

369TH INFANTRY REGIMENT 'HARLEM HELLFIGHTERS' OFFICER'S TUNIC, IDENTIFIED
Very rare tunic belonging to an officer attached to the famous U.S. 369th Infantry, the 'Harlem Hellfighters', one of the first African-American regiments to serve with the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I, fighting with great distinction, and which also suffered the most losses of any American regiment, with 1,500 casualties. The tunic, constructed of a lighter weight wool, bears a 2 x 1.75 in. black shoulder patch embroidered in silver wire in the image of a coiled rattlesnake waiting to strike, this being the DUI of the regiment. A period brass 'U.S.A.' insignia is affixed to each collar, and a stripe is sewn at the end of each sleeve. All buttons and hooks are present. This private purchase tunic is fully lined, though the lining to one sleeve is gone. The inside collar has been relined in satin, probably to cover the original wartime wear and soiling. The owner's initials, 'A T M', are sewn on the outside of the interior right pocket, and within the pocket is the printed label of Milwaukee tailors 'Globe Tailoring Co.' The owner's name, 'Dr. A. T. Munsell' is inked on the tag, along with the date: '8/23/17'. The tunic shows a crude field repair to a hole beneath the last button at the front, a small hole behind the left shoulder, and a few very small, scattered moth nips.
