JAN ZUMBACH (1915-1986) Polish-Swiss fighter pilot, a founding member and commander of the RAF 303 Polish Squadron. During the Battle of Britain, Zumbach scored eight confirmed kills and one probable, mostly against Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighters. He would garner 12 kills plus two shared by war's end. Rare war-date Battle of Britain Day "Combat Report", 1p. 4to., Sep. 15, 1940 describing his attack upon a formation of "About 80" Dornier 215's, Me-109's, and Me-110's between Hastings and London at 18,000 feet where he was able to destroy an Me-109. In part: "...F/O Henneberg was attacked by an ME 109. I fired a burst and ME began to smoke and draw away. I followed and firing a long burst...set him on fire. I then climbed and saw 12 Do 215s returning to France with protecting fighters. I signaled another aircraft who joined me, and we attacked, but...my ammunition ran out..." File hole at top, else fine. "Battle of Britain Day" is the name given to the day of the large-scale aerial battle that took place on Sep. 15, 1940, during the Battle of Britain. The Luftwaffe embarked on an all-out attack against London with approx. 1,500 taking part in battles which lasted until dusk. German losses in the climactic battle forced Hitler to postpone Operation Sea Lion, and the Luftwaffe turned its attention to "The Blitz" night campaign which lasted until May 1941. Zumbach is a joint leading character in the films "Mission of Honor" (U.S.) and Hurricane (U.K.).
