Description:

A most unusual signed item, a limited-edition china plate, 10 3/4" dia., produced by the Coalport porcelain firm of England, commemorating the fortieth anniversary of the Battle of Britain and decorated with a painted scene depicting the main fighters deployed the Royal Air Force in the engagement, the Supermarine Spitfire and the Hawker Hurricane. The face of the plate has been signed in black ink by ten R.A.F. pilots who participated in the defense of England against repeated Luftwaffe attacks: KEN MACKENZIE, KEN LUSTY, ALBERT GREGORY, TERRY CLARK, TONY PICKERING, BILL GREEN, TONY IVERSON, BOB INNES, JOCE MILLARD and KEN WILKINSON. The plate is housed in its original presentation box, and is accompanied by a Coalport certificate of authenticity, giving the limitation of 1014 out of 5000 pieces, and further signed by six veteran pilots, five of whom are listed above, with the addition of BILLY DRAKE. The signatures were collected from the pilots at the October, 2003 Duxford Air Show, and a photo of the signers (absent Drake) at the event is also included. Both signed pieces in fine condition. Sold with: "The Battle of Britain", by Nigel Cawthorne, (London: Arcturus), 2010, 208pp. oblong 4to., with a first-day cover commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Britain signed by R.A.F. veteran C.J. MERRILL affixed to the front flyleaf with photo corners; and with a commemorative Battle of Britain tea towel sold by the R.A.F. Museum at Hendon. Four pieces total.
