Description:

24TH INFANTRY (BLACK) MEXICAN BORDER SERVICE MEDAL
Very rare Mexican Border Service medal, awarded to a member of Co. B, 24th. Infantry Regiment, a 'Buffalo Soldier' who was a member of the regiment comprised of black enlisted men. The medal and ribbon, approx. 2 5/8 in. tall, consists of a gilt brass cross with blue enamel, the center section done in red and white enamel with crossed rifles and the unit designation. The original gold and blue silk ribbon is slightly frayed. The pin brooch is marked: 'Mexican Border Service 1916'. Overall very good. A punitive expedition was formed and commanded by General John Pershing, after Mexican bandits under Pancho Villa attacked New Columbus, New Mexico in 1916. Many federal and state troops participated in this military precursor to our involvement in World War I. This was the first time that many federal units had served together in regiment-sized strength since the days of campaigning against Indian tribes in the West.
