Description:

1878 LINCOLN COUNTY RECEIPT
Interesting association piece, 1p. 16mo., Fort Stanton, NM, Oct. 17, 1878, a receipt issued by Will Dowlin & Co. indicating $16.00 payment received of Trinidad Vigil $16.00 for a plow charged to George Kimball for Vincente Romero. Very good. There is quite a tangled web here: Vincente Romero was a gunman killed in the battle of Lincoln with Alexander McSween the past July 15th. George Kimball was sheriff and a perennial office-seeker, defeated for that office the following year by Pat Garrett, and Dowlin was a noted owner of a trading post. Clearly, Sheriff Kimball was seeking favor with Romero, who would die instead fighting with the Regulators!
