Description:

1860 LINCOLN ELECTION BROADSIDE
A lengthy, great content election broadside advocating the candidacy of future President Abraham Lincoln, 1p. 8.5 x 18 in., Providence, August 10, 1860, an appeal made by the 'Republican State Central Committee' to the 'Electors of Rhode Island.' In part: '...The recent public exposure...of the widespread corruptions of our government are a cause of sorrow and humiliation to every thoughtful man...It is consoling to find that this mortifying exposure has aroused a spirit of reform...there must be a change from this low, this deplorable condition of our affairs...we must begin by placing an honest man at the head of affairs, one...[who] will infuse a virtuous energy into all the arteries of government, and who...will be President of the whole people, of the whole country...But who shall do this?...the Republican party in convention unanimously nominated Abraham Lincoln of Illinois, a man proverbial for uncompromising honesty, indomitable energy, and fearless independence of character...[if] any at the north or south believe slavery to be wrong and bad and debasing and inimical to the national prosperity, it is the duty of all such to endeavor to save our territory from that blighting curse...We feel, that to all such, an appeal in behalf of our country, in its present exigencies, will not be in vain. Let us unite and re-establish the government by the overthrow of those who have virtually subverted it, and leave the discussion of its modifications till we have made sure of a government to modify...' Slightly toned with light foxing and a few collector notations. Matted and framed. Earlier that year in March the House of Representatives empaneled the 'Convode Committee' to investigate allegations of corruption and abuse of powers in the Buchanan administration. While its results were unable to establish grounds for impeachment, Republican operatives across the country issued copies of the report as campaign material to keep it on the nation's mind. Even though Lincoln would win the Republican nomination, it was not quite as seamless as the broadside makes it sound. In May, going into the convention, the soon to be president was not even in the top three of favorites for the nomination. He trailed his future cabinet members, William H. Seward and Salmon P. Chase, in addition to Missouri politician Edward Bates. As the convention advanced, however, the three more popular candidates fell out of favor with their constituents for reasons including alleged radicalism, stances on slavery, and constitutional rights. Lincoln then began to emerge as a frontrunner due to his moderate slavery stance, long support for economic issues, western origins, and strong oratory. He would go on to win the nomination and eventually the Presidency.
