Description:

1850'S STATE OF OREGON PRESENTATION CLAUBERG GILDED SWORD
Civil War Cavalry Non-Regulation Officer's Sword / Saber by Clauberg, blade 32.25 in., approx. 37.75 in. long overall. The grip on this sword is constructed of sharkskin wrapped with an intricately set of three twisted wires which still remain quite taut. The large steel basket with engraved accents is simply designed and still retains traces of the original silver-wash. The tang of the blade is peened at the top of the rounded pommel. The left side of the ricasso is marked 'W. Clauberg Solingen' with a knight with sword stamp. The spine of the blade is marked 'IRON PROOF'. The blade is beautifully etched and partially gilded and marked with the American eagle and 'E. Pluribus Unum' on the left side and 'U.S.' on the right side. Additionally, at the center of the engraving on the right side of the blade appears the seal of the State of Oregon with the slogan 'The Union' and also displaying images of soldiers, stands of arms, flags, muskets, etc. The opposite side is similar, displaying an eagles, swords, drums, and a filigree pattern. The scabbard appears to be nickeled brass with brass fittings. It is in fine condition, free of any dents or other appreciable damage. These swords were used during the Civil War, having been imported from Germany and sold through various retailers. The same model sword is pictured and described on pages 83-85 of 'The American Sword 1775-1945' by Herald Leslie Peterson.
