Description:

MODEL 1840 ENGRAVED CAVALRY SABER
Excellent example of the Model 1840 'wristbreaker' cavalry saber, beautifully engraved. The 34 in. blade has an even, light gray patina with a clean, nick-free edge. It features on the right side a deeply-engraved image of an eagle with a sunburst behind it, its beak holding a banner reading: 'E PLURIBUS UNUM'. The left side of the blade displays a 'U.S.' with elaborate filigree on either side. The three-branch guard and leather-wrapped grip are fine, the brass wire intact and taut. The leather on the grip shows some minute chips, not at all distracting. The leather washer at the hilt is also present, though worn as one would expect. The original steel scabbard with twin suspension rings is also present and showing no substantive dents or dings, with only some light corrosion on both sides near the drag. Overall an excellent piece.
