Description:

1801 COMMANDER''S LOG BOOK FROM FORT WILKINSON, CREEK INDIAN TERRITORY
Fort Wilkinson was established in 1797 as an Indian trading post near what is now Milledgeville, Ga. Under the Treaty of New York (1790), Creek Indians were provided agricultural implements from the fort. In the 1802 Treaty of Fort Wilkinson, the Creek were persuaded to surrender land and allow establishment of additional forts to "protect" their frontiers. Offered here is a bound log book composed at Fort Wilkinson from Dec. 8, 1800 to Nov. 24, 1801, approx. 190pp. legal folio, bound. Virtually all of the entries are written and signed by Major WILLIAM PETERS, commander of the fort who had previously led a sub-legion under James Wilkinson. About half of the content concerns disciplinary matters and courts martial held at this distant outpost in these early years. Charges include: "...abusive language...absent from quarters...rioting and fighting after tattoo...mutinous & seditious conduct...stealing shoes and shirts...telling lies..." Most interesting is a complaint of: "...Suffering Soldiers to play Ball...inducing them to enter the factory...in search of their Balls...". Punishments ranged from demotion to the ranks to one hundred lashes in public. Other matters attended to include the listing of new regulations and orders from Pittsburgh and Washington, officer appointments, payment of the troops, arrangement of regiments, allowance of rooms in barracks, length of hair, instructions on proper marching technique, and so on. Covers detached, first and last ten or so pages beaten-up, some text light or stained but still legible - overall good condition.
