Description:

WOOD AND DECK NAIL FROM THE HULL OF PERRY''S U.S.S. NIAGARA
Two neat artifacts from the USS NIAGARA, a 4" x 1" x 1" section of wood taken from the vessel''s hull or deck, along with a 5 1/2" hand-forged iron nail, most likely also removed from the vessel''s hull. Both are contained within a ca. 1915 bottle with metal cap. A period label is affixed to the bottle with handwritten description: "Wood & Spike from Perry''s Flagship Niagra [sic] 1813 C. R. Kieth Navarre Ohio". Very good. The NIAGARA served as the relief flagship for Oliver Hazard Perry in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. The NIAGARA was sunk for preservation on Presque Isle in 1820. Raised in 1913, it was rebuilt for the centennial of the battle. After deteriorating, the restoration of Niagara was started again in the 1930s, but was hampered by the lack of funds caused by the Great Depression and she remained uncompleted until 1963. The new vessel has only negligible remains of the original warship.
