Description:

1690 POPE ALEXANDER VIII CONCLAVE DECREE
An interesting and possibly unique printed Papal document issued Aug. 20, 1690, titled in Latin "Favors and privileges granted to the participants of the Conclave" (election of the Pope). The 4to. size manuscript is bound with string at left margin, and comprises 23pp., twenty of which are printed, and three of which are in a manuscript hand. It is divided into three distinct parts, the first specifying rules, privileges and remuneration for the participants of the Conclave. The second names all the participants, including such diverse persons as clergy, doctors, blacksmiths, barbers, and, interestingly, servants. The third part comprises three handwritten pages, the first of which certifies the authenticity of the document, and is signed by Cardinal JOSEPH SAENZ DE AGUIRRE, likely Secretary of State. The second and third pages lay out the decree that enacts the document into law and is signed by Cardinals FRANCISCO CYBO, URBANO SACCHETI, and FRANCESCO MALDUCCHINO, each of which adds his personal seal. This rare document was labeled and bound in a nineteenth-century blue paper wrapper. Joseph de Aguirre (1630-1699), produced many works on philosophical and theological subjects. Light toning to edges and some complete pages, otherwise very good. Certainly worthy of further research.
