Description:

‘THE WAR OF THE REBELLION: A COMPILATION OF THE OFFICIAL RECORDS OF THE UNION AND CONFEDERATE ARMIES' (NOT COMPLETE)
Offered here are 131 volumes from the definitive historical edition: ‘The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies', published under the authority of various Secretaries of the Navy by varying Superintendents of Naval War Records between 1881-1901, all copies printed in Washington by the Government Printing Office. This is not a complete set but certainly close, only lacking volume six from series three, also with some duplicates. An exceptional collection for the Civil War buff being the most extensive collection of American Civil War land warfare records available to the general public, including: first-hand accounts, orders, reports, maps, diagrams, and correspondence drawn from official records of both the Confederate and Union armies. Accompanying these books is the collection: ‘Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies 1861-1865'. Again, this is not a complete set, lacking thirty-nine of the 175 plates, published in 1895. These plates show battle-field maps, technical drawings, and illustrations of uniforms. Conditions vary with some pieces showing significant wear, though overall the collection is in very good condition. It is remarkably rare to see this collection fully intact. Also present with this lot are other various period Civil War books, including: ‘Soldier's National Cemetery, At Gettysburg' (Harrisburg: Singerly & Myers, State Printers), 1867. 282pp.8vo., black boards; ‘Southern Generals, Their Lives and Campaigns' (New York: Charles B. Richardson), 1866. 473pp. 8vo., brown boards; and 'Officers of the Army and Navy Who Served in the Civil War' (Philadelphia: L.R. Hamersly & Co.), 1893. 419pp. 4to., brown boards.
