UNION VOLUNTEER YEARNS FOR ARMY COMMISSION
Fine content A.L.S. of Joseph J. Henry, Co. H of the New Jersey 9th Infantry, 3pp. 8vo., Washington, Aug. 27, 1861, to his brother. In part: ‘…I wrote you last Sunday expecting to leave…for home but am detained with the very faint hope of getting in the regular army. Mr. Ketchum the other day said to me ‘I think I shall have a captaincy U.S.A. to dispose of; how would it suit you, Joe?' At the time I avoided a direct reply but upon a night's reflection, I decided to desire it most ardently. Ketchum is waiting to have an interview with Cameron on this subject…I am studying Hardee in leisure moments, for if I don't get this magnificent place…I shall be ready to assume a communication in some Volunteer Regt. Think I shall go direct to Trenton from here & see what the prospect are for a position in one of the new Regiments. I came down here upon the advice of Col. Wright who thought that in order to secure my consulship it was only necessary to see Mr. Fred Seward. Well I have seen…Seward twice without obtaining a particle of satisfaction. I am confident they never meant to appoint me…I get exceptionally blue sometimes in reflecting upon my dull life, want of success & meagre prospects. I long to be in camp…in the excitement and novelty of the situation…'. Henry's desire for battle would materialize, and in the worst possible way: just five months after this letter, he was killed in action at Roanoke Island. With the original transmittal cover, very good to fine.
