Description:

‘ST LOUIS AIR RACES'
A superb poster advertising the National Air Races, a series of pylon and cross-country races that have taken place in the United States since 1920. The science of aviation, and the speed and reliability of aircraft and engines grew rapidly during this period. This poster, measuring 14 x 21 in., was made for the St. Louis races, which inspired a young Charles Lindbergh to take to the sky. It depicts two biplanes flying around a pylon with bleachers full of spectators watching. It is captioned: ‘Over 200 miles per hour,' ‘International Air Races St. Louis – October 1-2-3,' and ‘AERONAUTICAL EXHIBITION AERO CONGRESS AIR INSTITUTE VEILED PROPHET.' On the verso are architectural plans for a floor of a house, indicating this poster was a proof. Included is a letter of authenticity from the Missouri Historical Society. Small holes throughout with rough margins and repaired tears with archival tape, otherwise very good.
