Description:

A scarce Civil War book: ‘Revised United States Army Regulations 1861' (Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co.), 1861. 559pp. 8vo., blue boards with gold lettering. These books were carried by Union Army officers, so they always had a reference of the rules they were expected to follow. This particular copy belonged to Lieutenant Calvin Pardee of Co. N of the 28th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, who signs his name and adds his regiment on the interior of the front cover. Pardee first enlisted in the Union Army in April of 1861 at age 19, first serving with Company D, 1st Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers until eventually transferring to Company N, 28th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, which was funded by his father. Pardee saw action at Antietam but was forced to resign in 1862 due to an attack of typhoid fever. After his resignation he spent the next 22 years working in his father's mining business, later becoming an entrepreneur in his own right. After a year of failing health Pardee passed away in 1923. The book shows expected wear to the covers with chipping, and some spotting to the interior of the covers. Overall, very good.
