Description:

Book: ‘American Artillerist's Companion, or Elements of Artillery' by French Artillerist Anne-Louis de Tousard (Philadelphia: C. and A. Conrad & Co.), 1809. 670pp. 8vo., brown boards. This influential book later became the basic manual for U.S. artillerymen. The first page bears a handwritten inscription, in part: ‘Taken from Beaufort S.C. after the capture of the forts at Port Royal...November 7, 1861. One year from the passage of the...Secession Act. U.S.S. Pawnee. J.G. Briggs...' The U.S.S. Pawnee was sent to Charleston, South Carolina to relieve the garrison of Major Robert Anderson at Fort Sumter in April of 1861 but got delayed due to a storm. By the time she arrived the fort had already been surrendered to Confederate forces. The front cover has fully detached with spotting and damp stains throughout. A significant book with an intriguing back story.
