Description:

‘A SURVEY OF BOSTON AND ITS VICINITY'
A fine book entitled ‘A Survey of Boston and Its Vicinity' by John G. Hales (Boston: Ezra Lincoln), 1821. 156pp. 12mo., a very detailed and at the time definitive description of Boston and the surrounding area containing accurate distances between towns and villages. JOHN G. HALES (1785-1832) was a very influential figure in cartography, creating incredibly detailed maps of various areas in New England, mostly around the Boston area. Various ownership signatures present, including two which read ‘Moses Brown'. MOSES BROWN (1738-1836) was an American abolitionist and inventor who designed and built the first water-powered cotton mill in the United States with Samuel Slater. Brown broke from his family after converting to Quakerism, primarily because of his family's refusal to end its association with the slave trade. Brown became an active abolitionist and an advocate for African Americans, both slave and free. Lightly toned, otherwise near fine. Rebound.
