(1875-1939) Prolific American author of tales of the American West, including ‘Riders of the Purple Sage.'. Acerbic A.L.S. signed with his birth name ‘Pearl' 1p. 4to., [New York, Dec. 8, 1903], to his girlfriend Lina E. Roth – and later wife – whom he called ‘Dolly'. In part: ‘…I read your note; behind the lines, between them, and all over. See here: This will not do. I have trusted you and told you things and I am sorry. I might have had better sense. You have made me angry with you again; when I don't want to be. Why why can't you let well enough alone? When I see you, I'll have more to say…'. With the original transmittal cover cancelled Dec. 8, 1903. At the time of this letter, Grey was a practicing dentist in New York City. In 1905, he gave up dentistry for writing full-time, married Dolly, and published his first best-seller, ‘The Spirit of the Border'. Very good.
