YAZOO PASS EXPEDITION
Good content Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., "On Board Steamer Cermader", "Near Helena, Arkansas", Apr. 12, 1863 in which "Thomas" writes to a friend at the conclusion of Grant's abortive "end run" during the Vicksburg campaign. In part: "...We have been on a tour down the Yazoo pass...we did not fight much, we had two men wounded and one or two killed on picket...They or we was so close we could hear them beating their drums. That is pretty close not to fight over, and their pickets talked every day...Some of our boys had an old Secesh here this morning marching him around with a musket over him...several of our men drowned going down by their awkwardness and one or two shot by Guerillas on shore. There was some taken prisoners too...The women as we went down was waving their white handkerchiefs and some of the same places as we come back was burnt to the ground on account of the Guerillas being found...women and children was outdoors...on every side surrounded by water so aid was out of the question...they had everything but their honor...entirely without a shelter...it makes me sick at heart...all along the pass is cain [sugar cane] breaks for miles...". He adds a sketch of two plants on the verso of the letter. Very good, in an expensive leather slipcase.
