Description:

YANKEE THREATENED IN FREEDMEN'S BUREAU
Fine content soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., Brookhaven, Mi., Aug. 19, 1866. Major John J. Knox of the 5th Mi. Vols (wounded at Fair Oaks) and attached to the Freedmen's Bureau in Meridien writes his brother. He mentions returning to Meridian, adding: '...[I will] give them a chance to carry [out] their threat to hang me during my absence into execution. I made a speech to about 400 Freedmen and the Papers are giving me a terrible going over about it...there is no more freedom of speech here now than there was previous to the war, and if ever a man was universally detested I am in the Dist. of Meridian by the Whites - the Darkeys are all my friends and would fight for me...' He mentions he has become engaged to a Southern girl, once a 'Yankee hater...all of her friends opposed to me...for keeping the company of a Yankee Negro Bureau Officer...My health is poor - I drink a good deal...' Very good.
