Description:

YANKEE-CAPTURED 1862 C.S.A. ARMY REGULATIONS
A fine Confederate imprint captured on the field by a Union opfficer, namely the Regulations for the Army of the Confederate States, (Richmond: J. W Randolph), 1862. 422pp. 8vo., rebound with original paper covers attached to heavier linen-covered boards, with partial leather boards and paper label affixed to spine. Within, on the front flyleaf, title page, and last page, the volume has been signed in ink and pencil by CSA Capt. N. S. Walker who served essentially the entire war with the 48th Mississippi Infantry. That regiment saw action at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Spotsyvania Court House. A pencil note on the last page indicates that Walker was at "Orange Court House" on Jan. 1, 1864 and applied for leave to return home to Mississippi. Four months later, this book fell into his enemy's hands, most likely at Spotsylvania Court House where the regiment was subjected to bombardment by the 2nd Pa. Heavy Artillery. The front flyleaf bears a large slip affixed thereto reading "Property of R[ichard]. C[hew]. Horner Capt. Battery 'B' 2d Pa. Arty #66 Bancroft St.". Horner likely toured the battlefield after the action and recovered this "souvenir". A fine, evocative relic.
