Description:

(YALTA CONFERENCE) MEDALS OF GROUP CAPT. W. J. PICKARD
A superb medal grouping attributed to RAF Group Captain Walter J. Pickard who served as a station commander at Lyneham and was often responsible for several V.I.P. flights. Most notably in 1945 while stationed at Saki in Crimea, he was responsible for the safe travel of Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt onto Soviet soil for the Yalta Conference. The medals on a 7 in. ribbon bar include; a second type Order of the British Empire Fourth class in silver, an India General Service Medal with 'North West Frontier 1930-31' clasp on the ribbon and name stamped to the lower rim 'F/O. W. J. PICKARD, R.A.F.', the 1939-1945 Star Medal, an Africa Star Medal with 'North Africa 1942-43' clasp on the ribbon, the Defense Medal, and the 1939-45 India Army General Service Medal. Accompanied by Royal Mint case of issue for the O.B.E. Medal, and an HMS Hindustan medallion, 2 in. diameter. Slight oxidation, but overall fine condition. Interestingly, Pickard's brother was RAF Group Captain Percy Pickard (1915-1944) who commanded OPERATION JERICHO, the bold bombing of a German prison in Amiens in an effort to free British prisoners held there. He was shot down and killed during the successful raid.
