Description:

YAKOV SVERDLOV
(1885 - 1919) Bolshevik party leader and an official of pre-Soviet Union Russia. A close ally of Lenin, Sverdlov played an important role in persuading leading Bolsheviks to accept the controversial decisions of closing down the Constituent Assembly, and ordering the execution of Czar Nicholas II and his family on July 16, 1918. Extremely rare A.E.S. in the top corner of an A.L.S. written by LEONID SEREBRYAKOV (1890-1937) an early Bolshevik politician who became of victim of Stalin's Great Purge. The letter, written on 'Chairmen of All-Russian Central Executive Committee' letterhead is 1p. 8vo., Moscow, 1919, largely untranslated but a recommendation for a Comrade Panyushkin. Sverdlov writes in the top left corner 'To appoint as roving commissioner with salary as a member of collegiums. Ya. Sverdlov.' Toned with scattered ink stains and smearing, a small tear has been partially repaired on the verso with tape. Sverdlov was diagnosed with the Spanish Flu in early 1919 yet continued his duties as Chairman of the Central Committee. He died on March 16th at the age of only 33.
