(1748-1800) Colonel in the American Revolution, commanded expedition to avenge the Wyoming Massacre. A.L.S. "Thos Hartley" and "TH", 2pp, 4to with integral address leaf, York, Penn., Aug. 21, 1797 to George Simpson, Cashier of the Bank of the United States: "I am sorry to hear that you are again likely to be afflicted with a malignant Fever but the Remedies are so well understood that I hope that no great mischief will arrive. In order to meet a note of 960 Dollars - due about the 25th inst: & another of 1000 Drs. due about the 1st of September next - I enclose two notes form me endorsed by Mr. Bingham- they are under separate covers directed to the President of the Bank of the United Sates on Thursday next, the other Monday a week - I have directed some Money to be paid on my account - if the Persons are punctual it will be paid to my account - I mean to set off on Thursday for Northumberland & shall be absent 8 or ten days… I hope you will excuse considering the present State of the World - & be assured that you may safely call me your obliged Friend..." Tipped to a larger sheet bearing a portrait of Hartley. Light folds, several tape repairs to verso of address leaf, else fine.
