Description:

610. JOHN WORTHINGTON American lawyer, member of the Governor's Council and a delegate from Massachusetts to the Albany Congress. A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., Springfield, Dec. 22, 1781 to a lady concerning a title and ownership to a property in Ludlow. Very good. The Albany Congress, of which Worthington was a member, was the first formal attempt to establish a colonial government independent from that of Great Britain. The plan, proposed by Ben Franklin an unanimously approved, proposed a President-General appointed by the Crown, with a popularly-elected Congress. The idea was of course rejected by Parliament as giving the colonists far too much power. $150-200
