Description:

Rare original World War II-era canine waterproof vest, 21.5 in. wide x 32 in. long, constructed of OD green poplin and lined with green blanket wool. The vest would be secured around a dog's neck by two metal snaps and two leather straps with metal buckles, and around its midsection by two fabric straps. The interior of the neck area bears an original Inspector's tag indicating the maker as Jules Segal of Philadelphia and dated May 3, 1943. The stitching of the tag has mostly come loose and is now held in place by a binder clip. Some holes to the lining, else very good. During World War II a program came about known as ‘Dogs for Defense' in which the military asked civilians to donate their dogs for guard duty, which would then be returned after the war. This lot is accompanied by paperwork showing dogs in the vest and giving a brief description of the item. Unissued, Very good condition.
