Description:

WORLD WAR II SOUTH PACIFIC PHOTOGRAPH GROUP
A group of 45+ candid World War II photos from 1943-44 taken by an American soldier during his service on Fiji, New Guinea, the Russell Islands and Los Negros. The images are in varying sizes ranging from approx. 3.5 x 2.5 in. to 4 x 5 in. b/w, and each is mounted to a vintage album page and captioned ink with identification and interesting commentary. These images richly capture native Fijian and New Guinea peoples, including a Fijian soldier holding the decapitated head of a Japanese soldier, bare-breasted women, and men in traditional garb. Other images show captured Japanese soldiers, stills from a performance by Mary Elliott (with the caption 'my first white woman to see in months'), American soldiers working on the Momote airstrip, American soldiers in New Guinea, and more. Photos are in overall good condition but album pages are considerably chipped, toned and generally in need of proper conservation.
