WORLD WAR II SOLDIER'S LETTER
A fine content A.L.S. of Fred F. Scott, 3pp. 4to., Shanghai, Oct. 16, 1941, to Mr. Robert L. Scott in New York City. In part: ‘… I am taking the privilege of writing to you in the hope to find one of my relatives who immigrated to the U.S.A. several generations ago…My grandfather James Albert Scott was born in…England…[went] to Danzig in 1876, where my father…was born…During the time of living in Danzig my parents became citizens of the Freestate of Danzig and therefore I am unfortunately of Danzig's citizenship myself, but this citizenship was withdrawn now from me by [the] Nazis, thru [sic] spreading the truth in Nazi-occupied territory is called ‘high treason' and for the same reason my eldest brother was killed in one of the ill-famed German concentration camps. I came to Shanghai from Danzig, where I had a book-publishing business and by selling anti nazi books and papers I was forced to leave Danzig over night, leaving my family and house, and I lost everything I possessed after having passed through the hands of Gestapo, where I suffered so much that I am glad to be in Shanghai. But the tropical clima of this city made me sick. I had to stay in the hospital for more than three months, during which my small spare-money has gone on expenses for doctor-treatment and hospital-fee. On account of my anti-nazi work I lost my citizenship so that I am here without any consulate-protection which means, that I cannot get any assistance in any direction. I am not of Jewish religion [or] descent so that the Jewish Refugee-Committee, which is the only one in existence here, cannot do anything for me. So I am quite hopeless…And it is therefore, dear Sir, why I put open on you this most sincere and humble request…The enclosed photo is a copy of myself…'. With said photo, and original transmittal cover with China stamp, registered to the United States and censored twice. Fine content.
