Description:

WORLD WAR II REMINGTON RAND 1911A1 US SERVICE PISTOL
U.S. military model 'M1911 A1' pistol, a second generation Model 1911 magazine-fed pistol chambered in .45ACP, with a 4.75 in. barrel, being 8.25 in. overall and manufactured by Remington Rand. Designed by John Browning, this is one of the most iconic pistols of all time, which consistently outperformed every other contemporary pistol for many decades. The left-hand side of the slide is marked 'REMINGTON RAND INC.' over 'SYRACUSE, N.Y. U.S.A.' Just below the slide stop is the stamped mark 'FJA' indicating that the gun was inspected by Col. Frank J. Atwood, the officer in charge of inspections of the Rochester Ordnance production district, which included both Remington and Ithaca. Also showing a 'P' proof firing stamp just right of the magazine release. The right-hand side of the slide is marked 'UNITED STATES PROPERTY', 'M 1911 A1 U.S. ARMY', and just below, on the side of the frame above the trigger assembly, is the serial number 'No 1297069'. This indicates that this pistol frame was originally manufactured in 1943. A faint Ordnance Dept. crossed cannons stamp is visible to the rear of the right grip which is the final inspection mark. Being completely Parkerized with exception of the two slide stop levers which are blued, this gun shows a Parkerized 'bump out' style mainspring housing on the back strap of the frame which exhibits a lanyard loop with a wrapped leather buckskin tassel, old leather and most likely applied by the US Army MP to whom this pistol was issued, and for whom it was originally sold. The pistol frame retains 97% of its original Parkerized finish but shows slight holster wear to the leading edge of the frame and to the front side of the trigger guard, and exhibits its original wartime checkered brown plastic grips. The bore retains a bright finish and shows slight softening to the rifling, and the crown remains well-defined. Pistol is fully functioning, and cocks and fires properly. Left side of the frame does exhibit a small spot of loss of finish, among other minor signs of honest wear. Comes with a replacement GI surplus magazine marked 19200- ASSY 5508694 MFR.1M291 indicating manufacture by US Army Armaments Research and Development Command, New Jersey (this code formerly assigned to US Frankfort Arsenal). A great example of the classic 1911 A1. Overall excellent condition throughout.
