WORLD WAR II NAVY CODEBREAKERS GROUP (23)
A fine group of 23+ documents relative to Navy codebreakers of World War II, including: an original typed document (unsigned), 2pp. 4to., ‘General Headquarters USAFIP North Luzon Camp Spencer', Mar. 14, 1945, a memo directed to all regimental commanders marked ‘Secret', listing the code names for airfields and airdrops. WITH: an original codebook and ID of Sgt. Roland Ives, Army Air Force 777th AAF Base Unit, 147th AACS Squadron. WITH: a typed document (not signed), 1p. 4to., ‘Hq 1122' [Northern Luzon, Philippines], Feb. 3, 1944, ‘General Order' number 3, asking district commanders to send in code to the Headquarters the number of their officers, enlisted men, men with rifles and so forth. WITH: two telegrams from Destroyers Battle Force stamped ‘Secret', sent August [n.y.]. The first, sent with cryptosystem ‘Cupid', reads in part: ‘…From route point Lat 9 degrees south long 179-39 east proceed to second channel Espiritu Santo repeat…New Hebrides to arrive during daylight 16 August X cincpac…'. The second, sent with ‘Secret Cryptosystem' reads in part: ‘…Cosmopac sends x Sabine depart Fantan two about nineteen hours zed nineteen August proceed second channel Espiritu Santo Island…proceed to join Sabine vicinity route affirm about 0100…escort two destination x…'. WITH: items owned by cryptographer Malcolm Shepard of the 3115 Signal Service Co., stationed in Kandy, Ceylon, including his eye exam, pay record, and a memorial booklet of names of the members. WITH: a typed document (not signed), 2pp. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], titled ‘On Staying out of Portsmouth, and Being a Happy Communicator', with directions and codes of conduct; WITH: a memo from the USS HERCULES re: coding; blank forms for the codebreakers' use from the USS NIOBRARA Code Room; a typed Navy document, 1p. 4to., May 29, 1942, titled ‘last publications drawn by this vessel', which remains unnamed; a Japanese Navy encoded message in pencil; a document listing ‘CSP's and their long titles'; a page of notes from Ensign Sharpe dated 1942, listing codes and ciphers; two blank forms titled ‘Shackle Codes', and more.
