WORLD WAR II K.I.A. BRITISH SOLDIER'S MEMORIAL BOARD
Handmade presentation board, 15 x 10.5 in., made by the family of fallen soldier Private R. Hill, service number 5887867. Mounted to the black poster board are three medals Hill received, including the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, and the War Medal 1939-45, all with original ribbons. Other pieces include: a typed document presenting aforementioned medals and indicating they were granted posthumously; a typed letter, 1p. 8vo. on War Office letterhead, London, Sep. 11, 1944, informing Hills' parents that he is buried in the ‘Syracuse British Cemetery, Sicily, Plot 4, Row E, Grave No. 6'; photo of the gravesite; photo, presumably of Hill posing with two fellow soldiers in uniform; and a small cut section from a newspaper, appearing to be a part of his obituary. The War Office letter also states that Hill was a member of the 2nd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment, which was a part of the Regular Army seeing action as part of the British Expeditionary Force in the battles of France and Belgium, also part of the 338,000 soldiers who had to be evacuated at Dunkirk.
