Description:

WORLD WAR II FIFTH ARMY BATTLE MAPS OF ITALIAN MAINLAND
Excellent collection of 19 battle maps, many apparently battle-used, all U.S. Army issue in 1943 and stamped with the name of their owner, Major Raymond Kenny, Co. D, 2675th Regt., A.C.C. This regiment, part of the Allied Control Commission, was deployed in Italy from Jan. 1, 1944, until shortly after the German surrender, and was attached to the headquarters of the 5th Army. The maps, of varying sizes but all over 26 x 26 in., are generally highly-detailed road maps with some topographical features. All but three of these maps have been marked-up at different times, spanning the entire period of the regiment's service in Italy. Various routes taken by Kenny and the 5th Army headquarters are marked in blue and red indelible pencil, with cities having their dates of liberation or the dates the 5th Army headquarters arrived there so annotated. Several of the maps show a good deal of added notations, including HQ camp sites, approaches into and out of Rome a week after its liberation; the front north of the Anzio beaches, the Gothic Line, and heavy German resistance encountered pushing the Gothic Line north from Pesaro on Sep. 24, 1944 to nearby Ravenna on Dec. 10, showing German pockets of resistance, 'tank traps', the location of a Canadian division, etc. Overall very good condition
