Description:

WORLD WAR II EPHEMERA FROM CAMP FORREST
Excellent collection of approx. 50 silk, felt and satin placemats, banners, doilies, pillows, pennants, etc., ca. 1941 - 1946, sold as souvenirs to soldiers and personnel stationed at Camp Forrest, near Tullahoma, Tennessee. Camp Forrest was one of the largest bases during World War II and covered an area of approx. 85,000 acres, serving as a training area for infantry, artillery, engineer, signal organizations and cooks. It also served as a hospital center and temporary encampment area for troops during maneuvers when Gen. George Patton brought his 2nd Armored Division from Fort Benning, Georgia! Camp Forrest was officially designated a prisoner of war camp on May 12, 1942, housing Italian and German POWs. The famed 17th Airborne Division completed maneuvers at Camp Forrest before being dispatched to Great Britain and their subsequent participation in the Battle of the Bulge. Many of the items offered bear images of soldiers, aircraft, armored vehicles, etc., usually with a banner and imprint indicating that they originated at Camp Forrest. Several include patriotic sentiments in the form of poetry directed at "Sweethearts", "Mom and Dad", "Wife", "Sister", etc., with some duplication. Of special interest to military collectors are two satin placemats and a felt pennant issued in commemoration of the Tennessee Maneuvers, and an 80th Division satin banner with applied regimental crest (in felt) mounted in the center, as well as items pertaining to the Army Air Corps. Despite being in storage for close to seventy years, this lot is in near fine condition.
