Description:

WORLD WAR II EMERGENCY SHIPBUILDING PROGRAM PHOTOS GROUPING
Fine archive comprised of photos and documents all related to the Emergency Shipbuilding Program during World War II. The program lasted from late 1940-1945, created by the U.S. government in an effort to quickly and efficiently build cargo ships to transfer troops and materials to allies in foreign theaters during the war. Eventually, a third wave of expansion on the program called for a planned output of all merchant shipbuilders to approx. 500 ships in 1942 and 700 ships in 1943. This program led to a huge influx of new workers and their families to these shipbuilding centers located on the West Coast and the Gulf of Mexico. Skilled workers were in high demand and some such as engineers found themselves 'frozen' in their jobs not allowed to leave even to enlist. Part of the archive offered here is a collection of thirty-three 11 x 9 in. b/w period photographs depicting: the simplistic homes of the workers, fantastic action shots of welders and other skilled laborers, a berthing classroom, celebrations and ceremonies held upon the completion of ships, and a fine image from a completed ship in the water looking towards the naval yard. The remainder of the archive is of various letters and documents from within the California Shipbuilding Corporation, all war-date. Includes: inter office memos on employment and Union issues on 'reinstatement', shifts, holidays, etc.; policies on employee transfers, vacations, gas rationing, etc.; original employee agreement and more. A fine opportunity to research a lesser discussed portion of the war.
