An interesting group of 16 World War II documents related to code-breaking in both the United States and British Armies. Includes: typed document [not signed], 7pp. 4to., ‘Headquarters, Third U.S. Army Signal Intelligence Service', May 12, 1945, titled ‘Memorandum…notes on lessons learned and conclusions for the period 1 August 1944 to 8 May 1945, and regarding the use of SIGABA, operator training, mechanical difficulties, cryptographic, security, radio procedure, code room operation, and more. WITH: a typed D.S. signed by B. ZATZENSTEIN, Signal Corps Major, 1p. 4to., ‘Headquarters, United Kingdom Base Office of the Signal Officer', May 17, 1945, to the Commanding Officer of the 3113th Signal Service, attaching a mimeographed document regarding the Clearance of Personnel for an American soldier. Stamped ‘Confidential' at the top, it authorizes William I. Patterson, Signal Corps 3, for ‘cryptographic duties after favorable investigation'. Patterson was a U.S. Army 8th Air Force officer attached to the 3113th Signal Battalion in connection with the coordination of Army Communications for D-Day, originally operating from the Port of Southampton, England. WITH: two copies of a printed document (not signed), 1p. 4to., ‘Army Services Forces Eastern Signal Corps Training Center, Monmouth, New Jersey', Aug. 10, 1945, titled ‘Extract', in part: ‘…Following officers and EM 849th Sig Int Sv Co having returned to the United States WP o/e 10 Aug 1945…for rehabilitation recuperation and recovery upon expiration of which they will return to their proper sta Ft. Monmouth', followed by a list of soldiers. The 849th Signal Intelligence Service was the main radio intercept and code-breaking group in the Mediterranean Theater. WITH: a printed ‘Certificate of Proficiency' 1p. 8vo., ‘Office of the Director of Training Technical School, AAFTTC Chanute Fields, IL', Nov. 29, 1945, certifying that George Kinder has graduated from the Code and Cipher Clerks Course, together with his Certificate of Appreciation for War Service award. WITH: a small printed ‘Enlisted Man's Temporary Pass', stamped Vint Hill Farms [n.d.]. Vint Hill Farms was the principal signal corps post for the interception of German enigma-coded messages during the War and also participated in the decoding of those messages. WITH: a printed form, 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], a ‘Request for Message to be Radiated by the BBC', used by SOE and OSS to request Broadcasts code messaged to European resistance groups. WITH: a dinner menu from a Thanksgiving gathering of officers of the 2nd Signal Service Battalion, Arlington Hall, VA. The 2nd was the main World War II Army code-breaking group. WITH: a menu for Thanksgiving dinner for the 15th Signal Service Regiment, Co. C Cryptographic Division, with a roster of members. WITH: four forms with abbreviations of code, cipher keys and so forth. Very good condition.
