Description:

WORLD WAR II AWARD AND DOCUMENT GROUPING
A fine grouping of awards and documents belonging to U.S.M.C radioman and gunner Jose Lopez. Includes: Air Medal of bronze construction in the shape of a compass rose depicting an eagle gripping two lightning bolts, with the blue and orange ribbon; a second Air Medal (cased), with ribbon bar and a Presidential Unit Citation ribbon bar with an oak leaf; a second Air Medal ribbon bar; and Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal ribbon bar with two oak leaves; Air Medal ribbon with ‘V' for combat valor device and five oak leaf clusters; 22 service stars for ribbon bars; four ‘V' combat valor devices; and four oak leaf clusters. WITH an 8 x 10 in. b/w group photo of the Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 243 and a ‘Route Forecast/Aircraft Report' for a flight on Feb. 13, 1945 in an unidentified area, and a typed document informing Lopez he will be receiving a gold star for his Air Medal. The most intriguing part of this lot is the ‘Aviators Flight Log Book' owned by Lopez of the dive bomber squadron, Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 243, with 28pp. filled in. The pages reveal the pilot to be Lt. Joseph Baker with Lopez as a ‘Passenger' serving as the radio gunner. The log shows the crew in a variety of tasks, including: dive tactics, squadron familiarization, division problems, dive bombs, practice dives, and strikes. Many pages bear official stamps notating totals for ‘combat strikes', ‘combat missions' and ‘combat time', as well as total time for the pilot and passenger. The 243rd served in Johnson Atoll, Palmyra Atoll, Solomon Islands, and the Philippines, earning the Navy Unit Commendation with one Bronze Star, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. A fine collection, worthy of further research.
