Description:

WORLD WAR I U-BOAT BROADSIDE
Scarce World War I news broadside, 1p. 11" x 16", the Nov. 1, 1916 edition of the "Hamburger Fremdenblatt", a newspaper established initially to report on ships and passengers arriving at Hamburg. This wartime issue, however, lists two interesting wire service reports related to U-boat activities. The first, headlined "''U 53'' zuruckgekehrt" ("U-53 Returns"), welcomes home that U-boat. Although left unstated, this voyage had been more noteworthy than most routine U-boat cruises; the U-53 had been tasked with attacking Allied naval vessels which could have impede the voyage of the blockade-breaking merchant submarine BREMEN to the United States. Before arriving, the Bremen had gone missing and was presumed lost. U-53 called at Newport, Rhode Island before stopping and sinking numerous several merchant vessels just two miles outside of American waters. U-53 would later go on to sink the USS JACOB JONES, the first American destroyer lost to enemy action. The second news item reports the return of three further successful U-boats, which between them sank 21 ships in the English Channel, totaling 285,000 tons. The broadside is evenly toned and shows folds with notable splitting, one small hole and light soiling at lower left, else very good.
