Description:

WORLD WAR I NAVY MACHINIST'S UNIFORM AND HAT
The World War I naval uniform of Machinist's Mate C. Popst including his hat, blouse and pants, bearing his name stenciled within and maker's tag: "EAGLE TAILORING CO.", Philadelphia. Popst served aboard the USS WARRINGTON, a modified Paulding-class destroyer in the U.S. Navy during World War I. The Warrington undertook grueling escort and anti-submarine duty off the coasts of Ireland and France commencing in mid-May, 1917. On the morning of 31 May 1918, while escorting a convoy along the French coast, she received a distress call from the Navy transport President Lincoln which, earlier that morning, had been torpedoed by U-90 well out to sea. The destroyer parted company with her coastal convoy immediately and raced to rescue the sinking ship's crew. She did not reach the area of the sinking until late that night but succeeded in rescuing 443 survivors. The Warrington also had the good fortune to depth-charge the U-90 while returning to port! From the personal collection of World War II and Civil War historian Michael Miner. Miner's thirty-year collection was built through an extensive system of contacts he developed with artifact hunters and diggers in Europe and the Far East, and he maintained careful records of the items he amassed.
