Description:

WORLD WAR I MILITARY PILOT'S PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM
An astounding aviation photograph album compiled by Army Air Service Lt. Frederick H. Schroeder of San Diego. Schroeder enlisted in June, 1917 and apparently became and expert flyer. He was detailed to served as an aviation instructor at Kelly Field in Texas and in Georgia and Tennessee as well, until leaving the service in June, 1919. The album is superb: it contains about 178 original photographs, most about 2" x 3" and 3" x 4" and depicting dozens of crashed aircraft (one stuck in a tree!), views of the ground and other aircraft taken from the air, camera gun images, photos of his base and fellow flyers, and many photos of all types of military aircraft from the period. One photo of a crashed aircraft has a piece of the plane's fabric attached thereto, and his "farewell" notice is penned on another piece of airplane canvas opposite a photo of yet another destroyed aircraft. Almost all of the images are in fine condition. An important collection from the Air Force's earliest days.
