Description:

A fine piece of German World War I "trench art" jewelry, a gold-painted alloy cuff bracelet, approx. 2 1/2" x 2", made from a copper rotating band salvaged from an artillery shell, with a grooved pattern overall, and with a minute brass and black enamel 1914 Iron Cross applied to the center of the band. The band is hinged at one side, with the opposite side fitted with an inline catch and a twisted gold wire securing latch. The interior of the band bears a repeating pattern of grid-like indentations, with the surface closest to the latch bearing the engraved inscription "Fricourt 1914". This French village was seized and fortified by German forces at the outset of the war, and was a major salient in the German front line during the Battle of the Somme in July of 1916, when it was recaptured by British forces. The bracelet shows slight wear to the edges near the clasp, else very good. The bracelet is housed in a green faux-leather case with gilt decorations around the edges, lined with cream silk padding and bearing the gilt name of a Mannheim jeweler within the lid, possibly not original to the piece but still period.
