WORLD WAR I GERMAN PHOTO ALBUMS
Excellent lot of five photo albums, each containing original images of German soldiers of World War I, includes: Photo album, 8" x 5", containing 14 b/w photographs, mostly individual and group shots of soldiers in uniform, with two views of destroyed buildings on a battlefield, several pre-war views, and an image of a grenadier''s grave. WITH: Photo album, 8" x 5 1/4", containing 48 b/w photographs, mostly real-photo postcards labeled as being taken in the Courland are of modern Latvia. These images depict the pastoral landscape of the region, buildings destroyed by fighting, artillery emplacements, soldiers'' graves, and group and individual views of soldiers and officers. WITH: Photo album, 13" x 10", containing 192 b/w image spanning the entirety of the war from 1914-1918, including images of German forces massing in Brussels, artillery pieces and operations, life in the trenches, landscape views of the Belgian and French countryside, observation balloons, group shots of soldiers in underground bunkers, soldiers demonstrating gas masks, soldiers'' graves, leveled towns and buildings, a destroyed French fighter, and a destroyed British Mark IV tank, with two of its unfortunate occupants beside it. Also present with this album is the March 10, 1917 edition of a German-language newspaper published in Brussels for occupying soldiers, entitled, "Belgischer Kurier", containing reports of actions on the Western and Eastern fronts, and of the U-boat war in the Atlantic, among much else. WITH: Photo album, 12 1/2" x 9 1/2", containing 32 b/w images and two newspaper cuttings, including group shots of soldiers and officers in the trenches, in bunkers, and with artillery pieces and machine guns. WITH: Photo album, 13" x 9 1/4", containing 86 b/w images, a mix of pre-war, and wartime views, with some post-war views form the early days of the Third Reich. The images depict the military career of a particular officer, and include individual portraits of him, views of him with his unit pre-war and at the outbreak of the war, in the trenches, and, beginning March 1915, many views of this officer convalescing, apparently with a leg wound, in a military hospital in modern Poland. Here, we see views of him being tended to by doctors and nurses, the operating theater, the recovery ward, and group shots with hospital staff and other patients. Near the end of the album, we see images of early NSDAP rallies, with our soldier present, as well as a shooting match, with his winning target sheet included. the photos in each album may show some fading, toning and silvering, and the album bindings may show wear, bumping, or splitting, else very good
